PHẨM ÐỊA THẦN HỘ PHÁP—THE DHARMA PROTECTION OF AN EARTH SPIRIT

Lúc đó vị Kiên Lao Ðịa Thần bạch cùng đức Thế Tôn!: “Bạch đức Thế Tôn! Từ trước đến nay, con từng chiêm ngưỡng đảnh lễ vô lượng vị đại Bồ Tát, đều là những bực trí huệ thần thông lớn không thể nghĩ bàn, độ khắp mọi loài chúng sanh. Ngài Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát đây so với các vị Bồ Tát, chỗ thệ nguyện rất là sâu rộng. Bạch đức Thế Tôn! Ngài Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát đây có nhơn duyên lớn với chúng sanh trong Diêm Phù Ðề. Như ngài Văn Thù Sư Lợi, ngài Phổ Hiền, ngài Quán AÂm, ngài Di Lặc, cũng hóa hiện trăm ngàn thân hình để độ chúng sanh trong sáu đường, nhưng chỗ phát nguyện của các ngài còn có lúc hoàn mãn. Ngài Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát đây phát thệ nguyện giáo hóa tất cả chúng sanh trong sáu đường trải đến kiếp số như số cát trong trăm ngàn ức sông Hằng.”—At that time, the earth spirit Firm and Stable spoke to the Buddha and said: “World Honored One! From long ago, I have personally beheld and bowed to limitless numbers of Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, all of whom have inconceivable and great spiritual penetrations and wisdom, and all of whom take across many living beings. Among all the Bodhisattvas, Earth Store Bodhisattva Mahasattva, has deep and weighty (solid) vows. World Honored One! Earth Store Bodhisattva has great affinities in Jambudvipa. Likewise, Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Avalokitesvara, and Maitreya, also produce by transformation, hundreds of thousands of bodies to take across those in the six paths, yet their vows have an end. Earth Store Bodhisattva has made these vows to teach and transform all living beings in the six paths throughout aeons as many as the number of sand grains in hundreds of thousands of millions of Ganges Rivers.

Bạch đức Thế Tôn! Con xem xét chúng sanh ở hiện tại nay và về vị lai sau nầy, nơi chỗ sạch sẽ ở phương nam trong cuộc đất của mình ở, dùng đất đá tre gỗ mà dựng cất cái khám cái thất. Trong đó có thể họa vẽ, cho đến dùng vàng , bạc, đồng, sắt đúc nắn hình tượng Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát, đốt hương cúng dường, chiêm lễ ngợi khen, thời chỗ người đó ở được mười điều lợi ích. Những gì là mười điều?—World Honored One! As I regard the living beings of the present and future, I see those who make shrines of clay, stone, bamboo, or wood and set them on pure ground in the southern part of their dwellings. They place within the shrines an image of Earth Store Bodhisattva, either sculpted, painted, or made of gold, silver, copper, or iron. They then burn incense, make offerings, behold, worship, and praise him. Such people will receive ten kinds of benefits. What are these ten?

· Một là đất cát tốt mầu—First, their lands will be fertile.

· Hai là nhà cửa an ổn mãi mãi—Second, their families and homes will always be peaceful.

· Ba là người đã chết được sanh lên cõi trời—Third, their deceased ancestors will be born in the heavens.

· Bốn là những người hiện còn hưởng sự lợi ích—Fourth, those still alive will have benefit and will have their lifespan increased.

· Năm là cầu chi cũng toại ý cả—Fifth, they will obtain what they want.

· Sáu là không có tai họa về nước và lửa—Sixth, they will not encounter the disasters of water and fire.

· Bảy là trừ sạch việc hư hao—Seventh, they will avoid unforeseen calamities.

· Tám là dứt hẳn ác mộng—Eighth, their nightmares will cease.

· Chín là khi ra lúc vào có thần theo hộ vệ—Ninth, they will be protected by spirits during their comings and goings.

· Mười là thường gặp bậc Thánh Nhơn—Tenth, they will encounter many causes of Sagehood.

Bạch đức Thế Tôn! Chúng sanh trong đời sau cùng hiện tại nay, nếu ở phần đất của mình cư trú mà có thể làm ra sự cúng dường ngài Ðịa Tạng như thế, thời được sự lợi ích như vậy—World Honored One! Living beings of the present and future will obtain these benefits if in part of their dwellings they can make offerings in the prescribed manner.

Vị Kiên Lao Ðịa Thần lại bạch với đức Phật rằng: “Bạch đức Thế Tôn! Trong đời sau nầy, như có người thiện nam thiện nữ nào ở trong chỗ của mình cư trú mà có kinh điển nầy cùng hình tượng của ngài Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát, người đó lại có thể đọc tụng kinh điển nầy và cúng dường hình tượng Bồ Tát. Thời con dùng thần lực của con thường hộ vệ người đó, cho đến tất cả sự tai họa như nước, lửa, trộm, cướp, nạn lớn, nạn nhỏ, vân vân thảy đều tiêu sạch.”—The Earth spirit continued to speak to the Buddha: “World Honored One! If good men and good women in the future keep this sutra and an image of the Bodhisattva where they live, and if in addition, they recite the sutra and make offerings to the Bodhisattva, I shall constantly use my own spiritual powers to guard and protect them day and night so that evil occurrences, floods, fire, robbery, great calamities and small accidents will be eliminated.”

Ðức Phật bảo Kiên Lao Ðịa Thần rằng: “Thần lực rộng lớn của ông, các thần khác ít ai bằng. Vì cớ sao? Vì đất đai trong cõi Diêm Phù Ðề đều nhờ ông hộ trợ, cho đến cỏ cây, cát đá, lúa mè, tre lau, gạo thóc, của báu, tất cả những thứ từ đất mà có ra đều nhờ nơi sức thần của ông cả. Nay ông lại tuyên bày những sự lợi ích của ngài Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát, thời công đức và thần thông của ông lại càng thêm trăm ngàn lần trội hơn lúc thường—The Buddha told the earth spirit Firm and Stable: “There are few spirits who can match your great spiritual powers. Why? All the lands in Jambudvipa receive your protection; all the grasses, woods, sands, stones, paddy fields, hemp, bamboo, reeds, grains, rice, and gems come forth from the ground because of your power. Moreover, your praise of the beneficial deeds of Earth Store Bodhisattva makes your meritorious virtues and spiritual penetations hundreds of thousands of times those of ordinary earth spirits.

Nầy Ðịa Thần! Trong đời sau, như có kẻ thiện nam người thiện nữ nào cúng dường Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát cùng đọc tụng kinh điển nầy, chỉ có thế tu hành theo một việc mà trong kinh ‘Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát Bổn Nguyện’ đã dạy. Thời ông nên dùng thần lực của ông mà ủng hộ người đó, chớ để tất cả sự tai hại cùng sự không vừa ý đến nghe nơi tai, huống nữa là để cho phải chịu. Chẳng phải chỉ riêng mình ông hộ trì người đó, cũng có hàng quyến thuộc của Phạm Vương, Ðế Thích, quyến thuộc của chư Thiên ủng hộ người đó. Tại sao lại đặng các vị Hiền Thánh ủng hộ như thế? Ðều do vì những người ấy chiêm lễ hình tượng của Ðịa Tạng Bồ Tát và đọc tụng kinh Bổn Nguyện nầy, tự nhiên được rốt ráo xa lìa biển khổ chứng đạo Niết Bàn an vui, vì thế nên đặng ủng hộ một cách lớn lao như thế.”—If good men or good women in the future make offerings to this Bodhisattva, or recite the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva, and rely upon merely a single aspect of it in their cultivation, you should use your own spiritual powers to protect them and not allow any disastrous or unwelcome affairs even to be heard, much less undergone by them. Not only will those people be protected by you alone, the retinues of Sakra, Brahma, as well as the other gods, shall also protect them. Why will they obtain protection from worthies and sage such as these? It is all because of their having beheld and worshipped the image of earth Store Bodhisattva, and from having recited this Sutra of his past vows. They shall naturally leave the sea of suffering and ultimately be certified as having attained the bliss of Nirvana. These are the reasons that they receive such great protection.
