CHƯƠNG THỨ NĂM—CHAPTER FIVE
DANH HIỆU CỦA ÐỊA NGỤC—THE NAMES OF THE HELLS

At that time Universal Worthy Bodhisattva Mahasattva, said to Earth Store Bodhisattva: “Human One! For the sake of the gods, dragons, and the fourfold assembly, as well as for all living beings of the present and future, please speak about the names of the hells which are places where living beings of Jambudvipa in the Saha World who are suffering for their offenses, undergo retribution for their evil deeds, and of the retributions undergone for evil, so that future generations of living beings in the Dharma-Ending Age will know what those retributions are.”

Now receiving the Buddha’ awesome spirit as well as your strength, great Bodhisattva, I shall speak in general terms of the names of the hells and describe the retributions for offenses and evil deeds.

East of Jambudvipa there is a mountain range called the Iron Ring, which is totally black and has neither sun nor moonlight. There is a great hell there called Ultimately Uninterrupted, and another called Great Avichi. There is also a hell called Four Horns, a hell called Flying Knives, a hell called Fiery Arrow, and a hell called Squeezing Mountains; a hell called Piercing Spears, a hell called Iron Carts, a hell called Iron Beds, and a hell called Iron Oxen; a hell called Iron Clothing, a hell called Thousand Blades, a hell called Iron Asses, and a hel caled Molten Brass; a hell called Embacing Pillars, a hell called Flowing Fire, a hell called Plowing Tongues, and a hell called Head Chopping; a hell called Burning Feet, a hel called Eye Pecking, a hell called Pellets, and a hell called Quarreling; a hell called Iron Ax, and a hell called Much Hatred.

Lại có địa ngục Kiếu Oán, địa ngục Bạt Thiệt, địa ngục Phẩn Niếu, địa ngục Ðồng Tỏa, địa ngục Hỏa Tượng, địa ngục Hỏa Cẩu, địa ngục Hỏa Mã, địa ngục Hỏa Ngưu, địa ngục Hỏa Sơ, địa ngục Hỏa Thạch, địa ngục Hỏa Sàng, địa ngục Hỏa Lương, địa ngục Hỏa Ưng, địa ngục Cứ Nha, địa ngục Bác Bì, địa ngục Ẩm Huyết, địa ngục Thiêu Thủ, địa ngục Thiêu Cước, địa ngục Ðảo Thích, địa ngục Hỏa Ốc, địa ngục Thiết Ốc, địa ngục Hỏa Lang—Earth Store Bodhisattva said: “Human One! There is an unlimited number of hells such as those within the Iron Ring. In addition, there is the hell of Crying Out, the hell of Pulling Tongues, and the hell of Brazen Locks; the hell of Fire Elephants, the hell of Fire Dogs, the hell of Fire Horses, and the hell of Fire Oxen; the hell of Fire Mountains, the hell of Fire Stones, the hell of Fire Beds, and the hell of Fire Beams; the hell of Fire Eagle, the hell of Sawing Teeth, the hell of Flaying Skin, and the hell of Blood Drinking; the hell of Burning Hands, the hell of Burning Feet, the hell of Impaling Thorns, and the hell of Fire Rooms; the hell of Iron Rooms, and the hell of Fire Wolves.

Such are the hells, and within each of them there are either one, or two, or three, or four or as many as hundreds of thousands of smaller hells, each with its own name.

Such are the karmic responses of the living beings of Jambudvipa who commit evil deeds. The power of karma is extremely great and can rival Mount Sumeru; it can deepen the great ocean and obstruct the sagely Way. For this reason, living beings should not look lightly upon slight small evil, considering them not to be offenses; for after death, retribution is undergone in the most exact detail.

Trông mong Nhơn Giả lắng nghe lời đó—Fathers and sons have the closest relationship, but their roads diverge and each goes his own way. Even if they should meet, neither would consent to undergo suffering in the other’s place. Now, drawing on the awesome spiritual power of the Buddha, I shall speak in general about the retributions for offenses in the hells. Please, Human One, listen for a moment to what I am going to say.

I have long known of the retributions of the Three Evil Paths. I hope that Human One will discuss them, so that living beings who do what is evil in the future time of the Dharma-Ending Age, hearing the Human One’s words, will be brought to take refuge with the Buddha.

Such are the retribution in the hells for offenses. There can be a hell in which offender’s tongue is stretched out and plowed through by cattle; or a hell in which the offender’s heart is pulled out and eaten by yakshas; or a hell in which offenser’s body is fried in cauldrons of boiling iol; or a hell in which offender’ is made to embrace a red-hot bronze pillar; or a hell in which the offender is followed everywhere by fire; or a hell in which cold and ice are ever present; or a hell in which there is limitless excrement and urine; or a hell filled with nothing but flying maces; or a hell in which there are many collections of fiery spears; or a hell in which one is constantly beaten on the chest and back; or a hell in which one’s hands and feet are burned; or a hell in which the offender is wrapped and bound by iron serpents; or a hell in which one is pursued by running iron dogs; or a hell in which the offender is stretched between iron mules.

In such retributions, in each hell there are a hundred thousand kinds of utensils for the working out of karma, and all are made of copper, iron, stone, or fire. Those four materials operate in response to amassed karma. If I were to explain in detail the retributions in the hells for offenses, in each and every hell there are hundreds of thousands of additional kinds of acute suffering. How much more numerous are the sufferings in many hells! Now, having drawn upon the awesome spirit of the Buddha, and in response to the Human One’s question, I have given this general explanation; for if I spoke in detail, I would not finish for kalpas.
