—Bấy giờ Ngài Vô Tận Ý quỳ gối chắp tay bạch với Phật rằng: “Vì nhơn duyên gì mà người thế gian gọi Bồ Tát này là Quán Thế Âm, xin Đức Thế Tôn mở lòng chỉ giáo.
At this time, Aksayamati Bodhisattva rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms and asked the Buddha, “Bhagavan! Why is Avalokitesvara Bodhisatva called the Hearer of all sounds?”
—Đức Phật liền bảo Vô Tận Ý: “Thiện nam tử! Nếu có vô lượng trăm nghìn muôn ức chúng sanh chịu ác khổ não, nghe Quán Thế Âm một lòng xưng danh. Quán Thế Âm tức thời xem xét tiếng tăm kia, đều được giải thoát.
Buddha discoursed to Aksayamati Bodhisattva, “Good man, Countless individuals are suffering from pain and torment. If they have heard of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and single-mindedly call upon him. Avalokitesvara will heed their cry. They shall all gain deliverance.
—Nếu có người trì danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát này, dầu vào trong lửa lớn, lửa chẳng cháy được, vì do sức uy thần của Bồ Tát nầy mà được như vậy.
For those who hold on to Avalokitesvara’s name, in the midst of fire, they will not be burnt. It is all because of Avalokitesvara’s miraculous power.
—Nếu bị nước lớn làm trôi, xưng danh hiệu Bồ tát này liền được chỗ cạn.
Even when one is carried off by a strong current, calling upon his name, one will find a shallow shore.
—Nếu có trăm nghìn muôn ức chúng sanh vì tìm vàng, bạc, lưu ly, xa cừ, mã não, san hô, hổ phách, trân châu các thứ báu, vào trong biển lớn, giả sử gió lớn thổi trôi ghe thuyền tắp vào nước quỷ, Nếu có người trong nhóm xưng danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát, thời các người đó đều thoát nạn quỷ. Do nhân duyên đó mà tên là Quán Thế Âm.
If a trillion individuals, in the quest for gold, silver, crystal, lapis, agate, coral, opal and pearls, venture into the open sea, a storm pushes them to the land of demons. If one among them calls upon Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, they shall all be saved. It is for this reason, Avalokitesvara is called the Hearer of all Sounds.
—Nếu lại có người sắp bị hại, xưng danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, thời dao gậy của người cầm liền gẩy từng khúc, người ấy được thoát khổ.
When one is about to be killed, and calls upon Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the foe’s weapon shall be shattered to pieces. One shall be spared.
—Nếu quỷ dạ xoa cùng la sát đầy trong cõi tam thiên đại thiên muốn đến hại người, nghe nguời xưng danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, thời các quỷ dữ đó còn không có thể dùng mắt dữ mà nhìn người, huống lại làm hại được.
If demons from the whole universe gather and wish to harm one, by the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva alone, demons cannot even give and evil eye, how much less inflict actual harm?
—Dầu lại có người hoặc có tội, hoặc không tội, gông cùm xiềng xích trói buộc nơi thân, xưng danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát thảy đều đứt rã, liền được thoát khỏi.
If one, whether guilty or not, is jailed and in shackles, and calls upon Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the shackles shall be broken. One is liberated and free.
—Nếu kẻ oán tặc đầy cõi tam thiên đại thiên, có một vị thương chủ dắt các người buôn đem theo nhiều của báu, trải qua nơi đường hiểm trở, trong đó có một người xướng rằng: “Các thiện nam tử! Chớ nên sợ sệt, các ông nên phải một lòng xưng danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát, vị Bồ tát đó hay đem pháp vô úy thí cho chúng sanh, các ông nếu xưng danh hiệu thời sẽ được thoát khỏi oán tặc nầy.”
If bandits from the entire universe go after a convoy carrying many valuables, one merchant amongst them says: “Good men! Have no fear, you should pray to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva can confer courage upon you. Those who call upon his name shall be saved from the bandits.” Hearing this, the merchants all chant, “Let’s take refuge in Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva!” By this act, they are all saved.
Vô Tận Ý! Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát Ma Ha Tát oai thần chi lực!
Aksayamati! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva is indeed powerful!
—Nếu có chúng sanh nào nhiều lòng dâm dục, thường cung kính niệm quán Thế Âm Bồ tát, liền được ly dục.
If one who is addicted to sexual desires prays sincerely to Avalokitesvara Bodhisatva, one will be detached from desire.
—Nếu người nhiều giận hờn, thường cung kính niệm Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát, liền được ly dục.
If one who is full of hatred prays sincerely to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, one will be detached from anger.
—Nếu người nhiều si ngu si, thường cung kính niệm Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát, liền được lìa ngu si.
If one who is ignorant prays sincerely to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, one is liberated from ignorance.
—Vô Tận Ý! Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát có những sức uy thần lớn, nhiều lợi ích như thế, cho nên chúng sanh thường phải một lòng tưởng nhớ.
Aksayamati! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, is very powerful and benevolent. Therefore, all beings should be mindful of him.
—Nếu muốn hậu vận còn được lâu dài, cầu sanh con trai để mà nối dõi, chí thành đảnh lễ Bồ tát Quán Âm, nhờ Đại Bi tâm mà sanh nam tử đức tài đầy đủ, đáng bậc anh hùng. Nếu phận má hồng, muốn cầu con gái, chí thành lễ bái Bồ Tát Quán Âm thì cũng được sanh hằng nga tiên nữ, sắc tài đầy đủ, đức hạnh vô song.
If a woman wish to have a son, prostrates and makes offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisatva, a son of excellence and wisdom shall be born. If she wishes to have a daughter, a daughter of grace and beauty shall be born.
—Vô Tận Ý! Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát có sức thần như thế.
Aksayamati! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva possesses all these powers.
—Nếu có chúng sanh cung kính lễ lạy Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát, thời phúc đức chẳng luống mất. Cho nên chúng sanh đều phải thọ trì danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát.
If an individual will prostrate to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva respectfully, one will have acquired endless merit. For this reason, everyone should hold on to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva’s name.
—Vô Tận Ý! Nếu có nguời thọ trì danh tự của sáu mươi hai ức hằng hà sa Bồ Tát lại trọn đời cúng dường đồ ăn uống y-phục, giường nằm, thuốc thang. Ý ông nghĩ sao? Công đức của người thiện nam tử, thiện nữ nhân đó có nhiều chăng?
Aksayamati! If someone holds on to the names of Bodhisattvas numbered equal to the grains in sixty-two trillion Ganges Rivers, offers them food, clothing, lodging, medicine as long as they live, what do you think, does this good man or woman acquire much merit?
—Vô Tận Ý thưa: “Bạch Thế Tôn! Rất nhiều.”
Aksayamati replied, “Very much indeed, Bhagavan.”
—Phật nói: “Nếu lại có người thọ trì danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, nhẫn đến một thời lễ lạy cúng dường, thời phúc của hai người đó bằng nhau không khác, trong trăm nghìn muôn ức kiếp không thể cùng tận.
The Buddha said, “If another person holds on to Avalokitesvara Bodhisatva’s name, making prostrations and offerings for just a moment, the merit between these two people are identical. For a hundred thousand million trillion kalpa, the merit will still not be exhausted.
—Vô Tận Ý! Thọ trì danh hiệu Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát được vô lượng vô biên phúc đức lợi ích như thế.
Aksayamati! Holding on to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva’s name has the reward of boundless and countless merit.
—Ngài Vô Tận Ý Bồ tát bạch Phật rằng: “Thế Tôn Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát dạo đi trong cõi ta bà như thế nào? Sức phương tiện việc đó thế nào?
Aksayamati Bodhisattva further asked the Buddha, “Bhagavan! How does Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva venture about the Saha world? How does he preach Dharma to all? As for his skillful means, what is the manner of it?
—Phật bảo Vô tận Ý Bồ Tát: “ Thiện nam tử! Nếu có chúng sanh trong quốc độ nào đáng dùng thân Phật được độ thoát thời Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát liền hiện thân Phật mà vì đó nói pháp. Người đáng dùng thân Duyên Giác được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Duyên Giác mà vì đó nói pháp. Người đáng dùng thân Thanh văn được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Thanh văn mà vì đó nói pháp.
The Buddha discoursed to Aksayamati Bodhisattva, “Good men, if there are beings who will be illuminated by Buddhas, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva will preach Dharma to them in the form of a Buddha. If one is to be illuminated by Pratyeka Buddhas, he will preach in the form of a Pratyeka Buddha. If one is to be illuminated by Sravakas, he will preach in the form of a Sravaka.
—Người đáng dùng thân Phạm vương được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Phạm vương mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is illuminated by a Brahma god, he will preach in the form of a Brahma god.
—Người đáng dùng thân Đế thích được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Đế thích mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one If one is to be illuminated by a Sakra god, he will preach in the form of a Sakra god.
—Người đáng dùng thân Tự Tại Thiên được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Tự Tại Thiên mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a Nirmanarati god, he will preach in the form of a Nirmanarati god.
—Người đáng dùng thân Đại Tự Tại Thiên được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Đại Tự Tại Thiên mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a Patanirmitavasavartin god, he wil preach in the form of a Patanirmitavasavartin god.
—Người đáng dùng thân Thiên Đại Tướng quân được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Thiên Đại tướng quân mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a Caturmahvajakayikadeva, he will preach in the appearance of a Caturmahvajakayikadeva god.
—Người đáng dùng thân tỳ sa môn được độ thoát, liền hiện thân tỳ sa môn mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a Virsravana, he will preach in the form of a Virsravana.
—Người đáng dùng thân Tiểu vương được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Tiểu vương mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a king, he will preach in the form of a king.
—Người đáng dùng thân trưởng giả, liền hiện thân trưởng giả mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by an elder, he will preach in the form of an elder.
—Người đáng dùng thân cư sĩ được độ thoát, liền hiện thân cư sĩ mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a lay person, he will preach in the form of a lay person.
—Người đáng dùng thân Tể quan được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Tể quan mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by an official, he will preach in the form of an official.
—Người đáng dùng thân Bà la môn được độ thoát, liền hiện thân Bà la môn mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is illuminated by a Brahma priest, he will preach in the form of a Brahma priest.
—Người đáng dùng thân tỳ kheo, tỳ kheo ni, ưu bà tắc, ưu bà di được độ thoát, liền hiện thân tỳ kheo, tỳ kheo ni, ưu bà tắc, ưu bà di mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a bhikshu, bhikshuni, upasaka, upasika, hw will preach in the form of a bhikshu, bhikshuni, upasaka, upasika.
—Người đáng dùng thân phụ nữ của trưởng giả, cư sĩ, tể quan, bà la môn được độ thoát, liền hiện thân phụ nữ mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by the wife of an elder, lay person, official, or Brahma priest, he will preach in the form of a woman.
—Người đáng dùng thân đồng nam đồng nữ được độ thoát, liền hiện thân đồng nam đồng nữ, mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a boy or girl, he will preach in the form of a boy or girl.
—Người đáng dùng thân Trời, Rồng, Dạ xoa, Càng thát bà, A tu la, Ca Lâu la, Khẩn na la, Ma hầu la dà, nhân cùng phi nhân được độ thoát, liền đều hiện ra mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by Deva, Naga, Yaksa, Gandharva, Asura, Garuda, Kinnara, Mahoraga, human and spirits, he will preach in the appropriate forms.
—Người đáng dùng thân Chấp kim cang thần được độ thoát, liền hiện Chấp kim cang thần mà vì đó nói pháp.
If one is to be illuminated by a Vajrapani, he will preach in the form of a Vajrapani.
—Vô Tận Ý! Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát đó thành tựu công đức như thế, dùng các thân hình, dạo đi trong các cõi nước để độ thoát chúng sanh, cho nên các ông phải một lòng cúng dường Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát.
Aksayamati! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has achieved such merit and virtues. In different forms, he ventures across the lands, bringing emancipation to all. For this reason, you all should single-mindedly make offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
—Quán Thế Âm Đại Bồ Tát đó ở trong chỗ nạn gấp sợ sệt hay ban sự vô úy, cho nên cõi Ta bà nầy đều gọi Ngài là vị Thí Vô úy.
In the midst of danger, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva can confer on you courage and security. Therefore, in this Saha World, he is also known as the “Giver of Courage.”
—Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát bạch Phật: “Thế Tôn! Con nay phải cúng dường Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát, liền mở chuỗi ngọc bằng các châu báu nơi cổ giá trị trăm ngàn lượng vàng, đem trao cho ngài Quán Thế Âm mà nói rằng: “Xin ngài nhận chuỗi trân bảo pháp thí nầy.”
Akasayamati Bodhisattva proclaimed to the Buddha, “Bhagavan! I should now make offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.” He then took off a necklace of gems and garlands, valued at a million ounces of gold, and presented it as a gift, saying: “Sir! Please accept this Dharma offering of gems and garlands.”
—Khi ấy Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát chẳng chịu nhận chuỗi. Ngài Vô Tận Ý lại thưa cùng Quán Thế Âm rằng: “Xin ngài vì thương chúng tôi mà nhận chuỗi ngọc nầy.”
At first, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva declined the gift. Aksayamati Bodhisattva insisted and said to Avalkitesvara Bodhisattva, “Sir! For our sake, please do accept this garland.”
—Bấy giờ Phật bảo Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát: “Ông nên thương Vô Tận Ý Bồ Tát này và hàng tứ chúng cùng Trời, Rồng, Dạ xoa, Càn thát bà, A tu la, Ca lâu la, Khẩn na la, Ma hầu la dà, nhân và phi nhân… mà nhận chuỗi ngọc đó.
At this point, the Buddha said to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, “For the sake od Aksayamati Bodhisattva, the disciples, Devas, Negas, Yaksas, Gandharvas, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, Humans and Spirits, you should accept the garland.”
—Tức thời Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát thương tứ chúng và Trời, Rồng, nhân, phi nhân…mà nhận chuỗi ngọc đó chia làm hai phần: một phần dâng Đức Thích Ca Mâu Ni Phật, một phần dâng tháp của Phật Đa Bảo.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisatva, for the sake of Aksayamati Bodhisattva, the disciples, Devas, Negas, Yaksas, Gandharvas, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, Humans and Spirits, accepted the garland. He then divided it into two. One portion is offered to Sakyamuni Buddha. The other is offered to the stupa of the Prabhutaratna Buddha.
—Vô Tận Ý! Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát có sức thần tự tại như thế, dạo đi nơi cõi Ta bà.”
Aksayamati Bodhisattva! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has such unobstructed magical power and ventures about in the Saha World. At that time, Aksayamati Bodhisattva asked again in verse:
Thế Tôn đủ tướng tốt!
Bhagavan, the one endowed
with all the holy marks
Con nay lại hỏi kia
Might I ask thou once more
Phật tử nhân duyên gì
Why is this son of the Buddha
Tên là Quán Thế Âm?
Called the Hearer of all Sounds?
Đấng đầy đủ tướng tốt
The holder of all holy marks
Kệ đáp Vô Tận Ý:
Replied in rhymes to Aksayamati:
Ông nghe hạnh Quán Âm
Watch carefully
Avalokitesvara’s deeds
Khéo ứng các nơi chỗ
He responds as well in all situations
Thệ rộng sâu như biển
His vows are as deep as an ocean
Nhiều kiếp chẳng nghĩ bàn
Unimaginable through the kalpas
Hầu nhiều nghìn Đức Phật
He has served trillions of Buddhas
Phát nguyện thanh tịnh lớn.
And pledged profound
and pious vows
Ta vì ông lược nói
I will make it brief
Nghe tên cùng thấy thân
Hearing his name or
seeing his image
Tâm niệm chẳng luống qua
Even for a short time is rewarding
Hay diệt khổ các cõi.
It can extinguish all sufferings.
Giả sử sinh lòng hại
If someone is malicious
Xô rớt hầm lửa lớn
Pushing one into a fire pit
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
And one is mindful of
Avalokitesvara’s power
Hầm lửa biến thành ao.
The fire pit can turn into a pond
Hoặc trôi dạt biển lớn
If someone is drifting in the ocean
Các nạn quỷ, cá, rồng
And surrounded by dragons, sharks
And demons
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
Mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Sóng mòi chẳng chìm được.
One will not be drown.
Hoặc ở chót Tu Di
Bị người xô rớt xuống
If one is being pushed off the peak
of Sumeru
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
And one is mindful of
Avalokitesvara’s power
Như mặt nhật treo không
One can float in the sky like the sun
Hoặc bị người dữ rượt
If chased by an enemy
Rớt xuống núi Kim cang
And cast off a diamond peak
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is mindful of Avalokitesvara’s
power
Chẳng tổn đến mảy lông.
He will not even be scratched.
Hoặc gặp oán tặc vây
If surrounded by enemies
Đều cầm dao làm hại
With knives and about
to be attacked
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Đều liền sinh lòng lành.
They will have tender hearts
Hoặc bị khổ nạn vua
Khi hành hình sắp chết
If persecuted by the courtis imminent
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is just mindful of
Avalokitesvara’s power
Dao liền gảy từng đoạn.
The knives will be shattered to pieces
Hoặc tù cấm xiềng xích
If jailed an in chains
Tay chân bị gông cùm
Both arms and legs shackled
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Tháo rã được giải thoát
One will gain release
Nguyền rũa các thuốc độc
If cursed or poisoned
Muốn hại đến thân đó
The one in danger
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
Is mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Trở hại nơi bổn nhân.
The spell shall be sent back.
Hoặc gặp La sát dữ
If encountered by demons
Rồng độc các loài quỷ
Dragons or ghosts
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is just mindful of
Avalokitesvara’s power
Liền đều không dám hại.
They will not dare to do any harm
Hoặc thú dữ gây quanh
If circled by wild beasts
Nanh vút nhọn đáng sợ
Threatened by sharp claws and teeth
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Vội vàng bỏ chạy thẳng.
They will run off and disappear.
Rắn độc cùng bò cạp
There may be snakes or scorpions
Hơi độc khói lửa đốt
With poisonous venom
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is just mindful of
Avalokitesvara’s power
Theo tiếng tự bỏ đi.
And they will scatter by themselves.
Mây sấm nổ sét đánh
If the heaven roars with thunder
Tuôn giá xối mưa lớn
Hail and rain pours down
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
One is mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Liền được tiêu tan cả.
The sky turns clear.
Chúng sanh bị khổ ách
If beings are all in confinement
Vô lượng khổ bức thân
And pressed upon by countless pain
Quán Âm sức trí diệu
Avalokitesvara has great wisdom
Hay cứu khổ thế gian
To emancipate all earthly sufferings
Đầy đủ sức thần thông
Full endowed with magical powers
Rộng tu trí phương tiện
He knows all expedient means
Các cõi nước mười phương
In all lands and in all dimensions
Không cõi nào chẳng hiện.
He manifests everywhere
Các loài trong đường dữ:
In all evil realms:
Địa ngục, quỷ, súc sanh
Such as hell, ghost and animal
Sinh, già, bịnh, chết, khổ
Facing pain of birth, aging, sickness and death
Lần đều khiến dứt hết.
He can eliminate them all.
Chân quán thanh tịnh quán
He is truthful and pious
Trí tuệ quán rộng lớn
He possesses great wisdom
Bi quán và từ quán,
With kindness and compassion
Thường nguyện thường chiêm ngưỡng
May we forever pay homage to him
Sáng thanh tịnh không nhơ
He is shining with spotless purity
Tuệ nhật phá các tối
Like the sun banishes darkness
Hay phục tai khói lửa
He can subdue disasters of wind and fire
Khắp soi sáng thế gian.
And illuminate the entire world.
Lòng bi răn như sấm
His compassion and precepts roar like thunder
Ý tứ diệu dường mây
And his kindness embraces like clouds
Xối mưa pháp cam lộ
Quenching the world’s thirst with holy water
Dứt trừ lửa phiền não
And eliminating all distress and sufferings.
Cãi kiện qua chỗ quan
Trong quân trận sợ sệt
In trial or in battle
Do sức niệm Quán Âm
Be mindful of Avalokitesvara’s power
Cừu oán đều lui tan.
The foes shall withdraw.
Diệu âm, Quán Thế Âm
The wonderful voice of
Avalokitesvara
Phạm âm, hải triều âm
Rolling like the Braha’s song and tide
Tiếng hơn thế gian kia,
Surpasses the best of earthly sounds,
Cho nên thường phải niệm.
Thus we should always be mindful of him
Niệm niệm chớ sinh nghi
Be mindful without doubt
Quán Âm bậc Tịnh Thánh
Avalokitesvara is a pious saint
Nơi khổ não nạn chết
In the midst of pain, distress, death and danger
Hay vì làm nương cậy.
He can be relied upon.
Đủ tất cả công đức
He is fully endowed with virtues
Mắt lành trông chúng sanh
And kindly looks upon all beings
Biển phúc lớn không lường
He has accumulated merits deeper
than the ocean
Cho nên phải đảnh lễ.
