Ahum (skt)—Hai âm “A” và “Hum” là căn bản của hết thảy mọi âm thanh và chữ viết (muôn đức như cát sông Hằng đều bao quát trong hai âm nầy). “A” là sự bắt đầu phát ra âm thanh, “Hum” là sự chấm hết của hơi thở hít vào. Chữ “A” là Đức Tỳ Lô Giá Na, “Hum” là Đức Kim Cang Tát Đỏa, chữ “A” là Bồ Đề Tâm, “Hum” là Niết Bàn, “A” là tuyệt đối hay chân đế, “Hum” là hiện tượng hay thế tục—The supposed foundation of all sounds and writing, “A” being the open and “hum” the closed sound. “A” is the seed of Vairocana, “hum” that of Vajrasattva, “A” being the bodhicitta and “hum” the nirvana, and both have other indications. “A” represents the absolute, “hum” the particular, or phenomenal.
